This policy explains how Cheqr ("we", "us", "our") collects, uses and looks after your personal data when you use our website. We're committed to protecting your privacy and complying with the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
1. Who we are
Cheqr is a UK price comparison service for fuel, broadband and mobile deals. For the purposes of UK data protection law, we are the data controller for the personal data we collect through this website. You can reach us at any time via our contact page.
2. What we collect and why
2.1 Information you give us
- Contact form: name, email address, subject and message. Used only to reply to you.
- Price alerts: email address and the alert criteria you choose (e.g. postcode, fuel type, target price). Used to send you the alert you asked for.
- Postcode: when you compare prices we take your postcode to find deals available to you. It is not stored against your identity.
2.2 Information collected automatically
- Usage data: pages visited, referring URL, approximate location (from IP), device and browser type.
- Cookies and similar technologies: strictly necessary cookies for the site to function, and (with your consent) analytics cookies to help us improve the service.
3. Legal bases for processing
- Contract / your request: replying to your contact form message, sending you a price alert you set up.
- Legitimate interests: keeping the service secure, preventing fraud, improving how it works.
- Consent: optional analytics cookies. You can withdraw consent at any time.
- Legal obligation: where we're required to keep certain records by UK law.
4. Sharing your data
We do not sell your personal data. We share limited data only with:
- Our hosting and infrastructure providers, so the service can run.
- Our email delivery provider, so alerts and replies reach you.
- Broadband and mobile providers, only when you actively click through to a deal — and only what's needed to attribute the referral.
- Law enforcement or regulators, where legally required.
5. How long we keep it
- Contact form messages: up to 24 months, then deleted.
- Price alerts: until you unsubscribe or the alert triggers, then a short retention window.
- Aggregated usage analytics: up to 26 months.
6. Your rights
Under the UK GDPR you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Ask us to correct data that's wrong.
- Ask us to erase your data ("right to be forgotten").
- Object to or restrict certain processing.
- Data portability, where relevant.
- Withdraw consent, where we rely on it.
- Complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
To exercise any of these rights, message us via the contact page. We will respond within one month.
7. Cookies
We use strictly necessary cookies for essential site functions (e.g. remembering your settings). We only set analytics or marketing cookies with your consent, which you can change or withdraw at any time via your browser settings or our cookie banner.
8. Security
We use industry-standard technical and organisational measures — HTTPS everywhere, encrypted storage, access controls, and regular reviews — to protect your data. No system is ever perfectly secure, but we take our responsibility seriously.
9. International transfers
Some of our infrastructure providers may process data outside the UK, including in the EEA and the US. Where they do, we rely on approved safeguards such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The "last updated" date at the top will change to reflect any material update. Please check back periodically.
