How to choose a SIM-only plan without overpaying
Headline prices are the trap. Nearly every UK network now bakes an inflation-linked rise into the middle of your contract, so the £8/month deal you signed up for often ends up costing £11 or £12 by year two. Here's how we cut through it.
Work out your real data need
Check your last three months in your current network's app. Most people massively overestimate — 90% of UK users need under 40GB/month.
Add up every monthly payment
A 24-month contract with a £3/month mid-contract rise costs £72 more than the headline. Total cost is the only number that matters.
Check the network, not the brand
Smarty runs on Three. VOXI runs on Vodafone. Lebara runs on Vodafone. iD runs on Three. Coverage = the underlying network, not the logo.
Short contract, or long one?
1-month rolling gives flexibility to switch when prices drop. 12-month locks a rate. 24-month usually only makes sense for handset deals.

Mobile deals: your questions
What's the difference between SIM-only and pay-monthly?+
SIM-only means you're paying just for the network service — data, minutes, texts — on a SIM you slot into a phone you already own. Pay-monthly (or 'phone + SIM') bundles a handset on finance into the same monthly bill. SIM-only is almost always cheaper if your phone still works.
How does the mid-contract price rise work?+
Most UK networks (EE, Vodafone, O2, Three, BT Mobile) now raise your monthly bill every April by CPI inflation + 3.9%. On a 24-month contract that's typically £2–£4/month more from month 4 onwards. Smarty, 1pMobile, Lebara and Giffgaff don't do this — their prices stay flat.
Which network has the best UK coverage?+
EE has the widest 5G and rural 4G footprint. Vodafone and O2 are close behind in cities. Three has strong urban 5G but patchier rural coverage. Ofcom's coverage checker gives you a postcode-level view.
Can I keep my phone number?+
Yes. Text 'PAC' to 65075 on your current network — they'll reply with a code that lets your new network port your number over, usually within one working day. It's free.
Should I go 1-month rolling or a longer contract?+
1-month rolling (Smarty, 1pMobile, VOXI) means you can switch the moment a cheaper deal drops — worth it in a market where SIM prices fall fast. 12-month locks in today's rate. 24-month is usually only worth it for handset deals.
