Is 5G in the UK actually worth paying more for in 2026?

The marketing says 'lightning fast'. Real-world 5G in the UK is more nuanced. When it matters, when it doesn't, and how to tell before you sign up.

Every network sells 5G as a headline feature. In everyday use, whether it's worth paying extra for depends heavily on where you live and how you actually use your phone.

What 5G actually does for you

  • Faster downloads — noticeable if you download large files, games or 4K video on cellular.
  • Lower latency — helpful for cloud gaming and video calls in busy areas.
  • Better performance in crowded places — stadiums, city centres, festivals.

What 5G doesn't do

It doesn't make WhatsApp faster. It doesn't make Instagram scroll better. It doesn't make streaming Spotify clearer. If that's mostly what your phone does, a good 4G signal is genuinely all you need.

The UK coverage reality

5G coverage varies enormously by network and postcode. EE and Vodafone have the widest 'proper' 5G footprint; O2 and Three lag in some areas. Standalone 5G (SA), which unlocks the biggest speed and latency gains, is still limited to select cities.

The honest test

Check each network's coverage map for your postcode, workplace and commute. If two of the three don't have 5G, don't pay extra for it — get the cheaper 4G SIM. Ofcom's own coverage checker is the neutral place to look; the network's own map tends to be optimistic.
